Stepping Into History: Celebrating the Anniversary of Gemini 4 and America’s First Spacewalk
Posted by Air Force Gift Shop on 3rd Jun 2026
When we think of the defining moments in space exploration, the image of an astronaut floating suspended against the deep blue curve of the Earth is one of the first that springs to mind. But before the International Space Station or the lunar landings, there was Gemini 4.
This historic mission marked a monumental anniversary: the day American astronaut Ed White floated out of his spacecraft capsule and took the United States' very first steps into the void of space.
For space enthusiasts and history buffs alike, the legacy of Gemini 4 is a testament to the courage, engineering, and sheer grit that paved the way for modern space travel. Today, we’re taking a look back at this incredible mission and why it still captures our imagination today.
The Mission: Pushing the Boundaries
Launched on June 3, 1965, Gemini 4 was the second crewed flight of NASA's Project Gemini. Onboard were two ambitious young astronauts: Command Pilot James McDivitt and Pilot Edward H. White II.
The primary objective of the multi-day mission was ambitious: to see if humans could survive and operate in space for extended periods, and crucially, to attempt an Extravehicular Activity (EVA)—more commonly known as a spacewalk.
The pressure was immense. Just a few months earlier, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov had performed the world's first spacewalk during the Voskhod 2 mission. The Space Race was at its peak, and NASA needed to prove that it had the technical capabilities to match and eventually surpass its rivals.
"The Greatest Experience"
On the third orbit of the mission, as the spacecraft flew over the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, Ed White depressurised the cabin and opened the hatch.
Clad in a specially designed 21-layer spacesuit and attached to the spacecraft by a 25-foot tether, White stepped out into the vacuum. Using a hand-held manoeuvring unit—a small gas-powered gun nicknamed the "zip gun"—he was able to control his movements, twisting and turning in the weightlessness of orbit.
For 23 exhilarating minutes, White floated high above the Earth. The views were spectacular, and White's joy was evident to everyone listening back at Mission Control. He famously remarked, "I feel like a million dollars," and later described the spacewalk as "the greatest experience... it's just tremendous."
In fact, White enjoyed the experience so much that when the time came to return to the capsule, he desperately wanted to stay outside. When Flight Director Chris Kraft finally ordered him back into the spacecraft, White sighed, "It's the saddest moment of my life."
Why Gemini 4 Matters Today
The success of Gemini 4 was a critical turning point. It proved that human beings could not only survive outside a spacecraft but could also perform tasks in a vacuum—a skill that would prove vital for the Apollo moon landings just a few years later. Without the lessons learned from Ed White’s 23 minutes in space, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin might never have walked on the Moon.
