The Story of the RAF Roundel: How a Simple Circle Became a Legend of the Skies
Posted by Air Force Gift Shop on 10th Jul 2026

If there is one image that instantly captures the spirit of aviation, the bravery of the skies, and the rich heritage of the British military, it is the blue, white, and red target—the Royal Air Force (RAF) Roundel.
Whether you spot it on the wings of a historic Spitfire at an airshow, on the fuselage of a modern Typhoon, or proudly worn on a polo shirt, those concentric circles carry over a century of history. But how did this simple symbol become one of the most recognisable icons in the world?
Grab a brew, settle in, and let’s take a flight through the history of the RAF Roundel.
A Chaos of Friendly Fire: Why the Roundel Was Born

In the earliest days of World War I, combat aircraft didn’t have standardised markings. When the Royal Flying Corps (RFC)—the predecessor to the RAF—first took to the skies over France in 1914, it painted the British Union Jack on their wings.
It seemed like a logical choice. Unfortunately, from thousands of feet below, British and French troops on the ground couldn’t see the fine details of the flag. All they saw was a cross, which looked dangerously similar to the German Iron Cross (Eiserne Kreuz). As a result, British pilots were frequently subjected to "friendly fire" from their own infantry.
A fast, unmistakable fix was needed. The French Air Force was already using a tricolour roundel based on their national cockade. To keep things simple and clear for allied troops, the British forces inverted the French design, placing a red circle in the centre, surrounded by a white ring, and enclosed by a bold blue outer band.
By 1915, the modern ancestor of the roundel was officially adopted, giving pilots a vital shield of identity in the chaotic skies.

Changing with the Times: The Evolution of the Circles

As aviation technology accelerated, the roundel had to adapt. It wasn’t just a badge; it was a tactical tool.
-
The Interwar Glamour (The 'Type A'): During the 1920s and 1930s, the roundel featured bright, vivid colours. This was the golden age of aviation pageantry, and the RAF wanted to be seen.
-
The Shadow of WWII (The 'Type B' & 'C'): As conflict loomed again in 1939, bright white rings became a liability, making aircraft highly visible to enemy fighters from above. The RAF removed the white ring entirely on the upper wings of camouflaged bombers and fighters, creating a muted red-and-blue "Type B" roundel. For the fuselage, they added a thick outer yellow ring ("Type C1") to ensure the roundel still stood out against dark camouflage paint schemes.
-
The Pacific Threat: In the Far East, the central red spot caused major confusion because it resembled the Japanese "Rising Sun" insignia. The quick-thinking solution? Mechanics literally painted over the red centres with white or blue to avoid catastrophic misunderstandings.
The Tactical Stealth Era
By the time the Cold War arrived and supersonic jet fighters took over, camouflage became high-tech. Bright red and crisp white circles don't exactly provide great cover when you are trying to hide a multi-million-pound fighter jet from modern radar and visual tracking.
This led to the creation of the low-visibility roundel used on modern jets today—where the white is removed completely, and the red and blue are shifted to subdued pastel shades, pinks, or light blues depending on the sky camouflage.
Bring the Heritage Home

Today, the RAF roundel is far more than a military marker. It is a badge of honour, a symbol of British engineering triumph, and a staple of classic aviation style. Whether you are gearing up for the next airshow season or looking for the perfect gift for an aerospace enthusiast, the roundel never goes out of style.
