The Legacy of HMS Invincible: The Royal Navy’s Most Iconic Warships
Posted by Air Force Gift Shop on 6th Jul 2026

When you hear the name HMS Invincible, you aren't just hearing the name of a ship—you are listening to centuries of British naval supremacy. Seven different ships in Royal Navy history have proudly carried the moniker, each leaving an indelible mark on maritime history.
From the revolutionary 18th-century wooden tall ships to the steel aircraft carriers that defined the Cold War and the Falklands Conflict, the story of Invincible is the story of modern naval warfare.
Let's dive deep into why this name commands so much respect across the British Armed Forces.
1. The 1744 Pioneer: A French Design That Changed the Royal Navy

The very first Invincible didn't actually start her life flying the White Ensign. Built by the French in 1744 as L'Invincible, she was captured as a war prize by Admiral George Anson at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747.
When British engineers inspected her hull, they were astounded. She featured a unique 74-gun capacity split across two decks, offering the heavy firepower of a massive flagship coupled with the speed, agility, and narrow rudder design of a much smaller vessel.
The Blueprint of Empire: The Royal Navy loved the design so much that they copied it. This "74-gun ship" became the backbone of the British fleet for over half a century; in fact, 16 of them fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Though she met a tragic end by running aground on Horse Tail Sand in the Solent in 1758, her 2017–2019 marine excavation remains the largest archaeological dive in the UK since the Mary Rose.
2. The Battlecruiser: Iron, Steel, and the First World War
Fast forward to the early 20th century, and the name was resurrected for a brand-new era of metal and machinery. Launched in 1907, the fifth HMS Invincible was the world’s first-ever battlecruiser—conceived by the visionary First Sea Lord, Admiral Jackie Fisher.
Fisher’s philosophy was simple: speed is armour. This hybrid warship crossed the heavy armaments of a battleship with the blinding speed of a smaller cruiser.
She proved her devastating effectiveness at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914, sinking the German flagship Scharnhorst. Tragically, her reliance on speed over thick armour caught up with her at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, where she took a direct hit to her magazines and sank with the loss of over 1,000 crew members.
3. The R05 Aircraft Carrier: Unlocking Air Superiority in the Falklands

For modern military enthusiasts, the most recognisable bearer of the name is HMS Invincible (R05), the lead ship of her class of light aircraft carriers commissioned in 1980.
Originally designed during the Cold War for anti-submarine warfare, she was rapidly pressed into service as a strike carrier when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in April 1982.
Alongside HMS Hermes, Invincible sailed into the South Atlantic and provided the vital air umbrella that allowed British forces to retake the islands. Her Harriers achieved complete air superiority against fierce opposition.
The "Invincible Myth"
So legendary was her role in the conflict that she became the target of intense wartime propaganda. Argentinian media claimed multiple times that she had been hit, heavily damaged, or even sunk by Exocet missiles.
In reality, the ship survived the war completely unscathed, returning home to Portsmouth to a massive hero's welcome. She would go on to serve with distinction in the Yugoslav Wars and the Iraq War before finally decommissioning in 2005.
