An Evening Photoshoot At RAF Cosford | Photographing Jaguar and Tornado Jets

Getting the opportunity to take photos of iconic jets is always an amazing experience. Last night we ventured to RAF Cosford for a Threshold.Aero event to take photos of a pair of Jaguars and Tornados GR.4s. This was our first time taking part in one of these evening photo shoots and there was a great turnout for the event with 80 photographers and their tripods arriving at RAF Cosford.

RAF Cosford is known for its iconic air shows that draw crowds of more than 50,000 people each year. The base itself was opened back in 1938 as a joint aircraft, maintenance storage and technical training unit. It remains as a training unit to this day. For the evening photo shoot we ventured into Hanger 146. This was home to the Jaguar and Tornado jets as well as plenty of other aircraft that we were photographing that evening. During the day this hanger is where apprentices work on the planes.

For the night shoot, everyone arrived at the base for 17.00 with cameras in hand and looking forward to seeing the planes. The aircraft which were confirmed for the event were two Tornado GR4s ZA447 (Mig Eater) and ZA459 (MacRoberts Reply) as well as the two Jaguar GR.3As.

At this event, a lot of the staging and ancillary equipment from around the Jets were removed so it was easier to get a clear shot of the plane without anything to block the view. The hanger itself was fairly dark with a few lights to illuminate the jets. This required long exposures to ensure our images were bright and clear.

Of course, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to take a cheeky photo of our Royal Air Force Hoodie! If you would like to see more of these photos from our evening Photoshoot last night be sure to visit us our FacebookInstagram and Twitter to see the images there.

If you have any photos of Jaguars or Tornado planes we would love to see them so feel free to add your own photos to the group!
